Choosing an ERP is one of the bigger decisions a growing manufacturer makes. It shapes how the business runs for years, touches every department, and is not easily undone. The difficulty is that on paper, most platforms look similar. Every vendor claims real-time data, cloud access and manufacturing support. So how do you tell them apart in a way that actually predicts how the system will serve you?
The most useful approach we have seen is to stop comparing feature lists and start comparing across five categories. Score each vendor honestly in each one, and the real differences surface quickly.
1. Productivity
The question: what does the system actually do to make you and your staff more productive day to day?
Look past the feature count and ask how the system feels to use. Does it reduce clicks or add them? Does it automate the repetitive work your team does now, or just digitise it? A platform that is powerful but painful to use will be worked around, and a worked-around ERP delivers a fraction of its value.
Ask to see the daily workflows your team would actually run, not just the showcase screens.

2. Functionality
The question: does it handle the manufacturing essentials, not just the financials?
Core accounting is table stakes. What separates a real manufacturing ERP is depth in the operational areas: bills of materials and routings, production planning, MRP, product costing, and mixed-mode manufacturing for businesses that run more than one production style. If a platform treats manufacturing as an add-on to an accounting system, you will feel the gaps within months. Check that the essentials are native, not bolted on.
3. Technology
The question: is it built on technology that will still serve you in five years?
Is it true cloud, accessible from any browser, or cloud-hosted legacy software with a web wrapper? Can it be customised with standard tools, or does every change require the vendor and a quote? Are upgrades on your schedule and non-disruptive, or a project you dread? True cloud architecture is the difference between a platform that grows with you and one you will be planning to replace before long.

4. Value
The question: what is the total cost of ownership over the life of the product?
License price is the visible number, but it is rarely the whole cost. Factor in implementation, customisation, training, support, and how pricing behaves as you grow.
A model that charges per user penalises you for adding staff to the system; a model that charges by resources used can scale more gently. Look at the full picture over several years, not the first invoice.
5. Risk
The question: does the platform reduce your risk or add to it?
An ERP holds the data your business runs on, so its security, resilience and support matter enormously. Look for strong security, reliable backup and disaster recovery, and vendor-managed updates that keep you protected without effort on your side. Consider the vendor’s stability and local support too. The cheapest platform is expensive if it fails you when it matters.
Score them side by side
Rating each vendor across these five categories turns a fuzzy comparison into a clear one. To make it easier, MYOB has put together a manufacturer’s ERP checklist that lets you score any vendor across all five categories on a single page. We are happy to share it, and if it helps, to walk through it with you against your own priorities and non-negotiables.
Download the ERP checklist, or book a discovery chat and we will work through it together.
